Does the iPad 2 Bounce? A Test We Don’t Want to Do!

Although we know that this is all about the product demo, we wouldn’t be caught dropping the iPads at iPadAppDev on the floor. Not intentionally anyway, one can’t always avoid those heart stopping slips and trips…

However, the Gadget Lab at Wired didn’t have as many qualms when they were testing the Smart Cover. Watch the video below (through your fingers with your hands over your eyes if you need to) and see for yourselves. The Smart Cover can easily protect against a fall, screen down onto a concrete floor, which is impressive. We aren’t sure it was really necessary to take a golf club to a brand new iPad 2 though (ouch).

If you want a good screen cover / armor for you iPad, Gadget Lab is probably a good place to start looking.

Amazing Keynotes on the iPad

Apple’s Keynote app is a great tool for presenting ideas and information on the iPad. There are countless situations where the iPad can shine as the tool of choice for those presenting and delivering information to a small audience, enabling them to get hands on with the data. Couple the iPad with a VGA connection kit and a projector, and the iPad becomes a great way to conduct presentations to a larger audience as well.

Keynote is very easy to use and comes with some great built in templates. Within a short time, anyone can construct slides with ease. There are a few differences with Keynote on the iPad and there are a few tips to getting the best from the app, especially if you’re building a more complex presentation in Keynote on a mac and then transferring it to your iPad for that all important sales pitch.

1. Remember that 1024×768 is all you have to play with. If you spend hours creating your masterpiece at a higher resolution, you’re going to run into trouble.

2. Not all the transitions/builds work on the iPad. You’ll have to do without Iris, Shimmer, Sparkle and Wipe. Make sure you test your Keynote first!

3. Make sure any fonts you use are available on your iPad otherwise they’ll be substituted for you alternatives.

4. Being familiar with your material is important if you’re delivering your presentation via your iPad. Even if you connect it to a projector, there isn’t a presenter view to give you a heads up on what’s coming next.

iPad – Will it shred?

Whenever a new gadget sweeps the news, there’s always someone trying something crazy. Fuel.tv decided that a brand new iPad might make a great skateboard. See how they got on in this hilarious video.

Sponsored Search on the iPad

Google Adwords, the pay per click advertising providers, have revealed that they have added the iPad to the list of mobile devices that can be targeted. This will be in addition to the iPhone, and all other mobile devices with full internet browsing capabilities, including Google’s own Android phone.

According to the Inside Adwords industry blog, they have completed their rigorous ipad testing and they feel confident in the iPad’s suitability as a platform for their unique brand of advertising.

What this means is that the demographic of users who own an iPad can now be reached directly. PPC advertising has always been able to reach the people who are most interested in the products being advertised- when they are actively searching for the very same thing. Now people will be able to see advertising geared especially to them in a host of different situations- using the iPad on a Sunday morning in bed will be like having the advertisements in the Sunday Times tailored exactly to you.

Googling the iPad

Google has confirmed that the software their iPhone app uses has been updated for the iPad. Users of the iPhone will already be familiar with the format, where the top Google products are available. These include Gmail, Calendar, Talk, Buzz, YouTube and Google Earth, to name just a few, all now available at your fingertips on the iPad.

Realistically, the app is very similar in make up to the iPhone app, making use of the iPad’s Apple Safari web browser for many of the functions, rather than remaining totally self contained…but it is good to see that the big boys are adapting for the new platform so quickly.

iPadAppDev.co.uk think this is only the beginning. Most iPhone apps will easily translate onto the iPad, so expect to see all your favourites there in time. Alternatively, if you have some fresh ideas, we can help you along the way.

iPad Guided Tours Now Online

Whilst we’re busy developing apps for the iPad, we’ve enjoyed watching the new iPad guided tours from Apple. There can be watched online here.

How Many iPads Sold Upon Release

The numbers are in – a group of Apple fans who happen to be stock investors have predicted how many Apple iPads sold on day one- last Friday.

Using data from their own purchases, taking the time stamps into account compared with the serial numbers for 48 iPads, they believe that 120,000 Apple iPads were sold on the first day of release.  Philip Elmer-DeWitt, a columnist who has been writing about Apple since the early days of the company has confirmed that these types are figures are likely to be close to the truth, based on his own understanding of Apple product sales.

One interesting fact that we do know about the sold Apple iPads is that more than 66% of them were setup for wireless internet-working only, without 3G capability.

Apple is limiting the purchases of iPads to 2 per customer, in a bid to try to control supply and prevent people from buying up entire shops before anyone else can have one.  Dewitt has said that 6 of the stock investors had bought two.  One woman from the group- the AAPL Sanity Board- said that she was in fact hoping to buy nine!

Here at iPad App Dev.co.uk would not be surprised to learn that these figures were correct, or even that more were sold.  As soon as the real figures are in, we’ll let you know how accurate this  prediction was.
